Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Sunset over Water Art, "Day's End" 11x14x1.5" Textured Oil Painting- SOLD

When the sun falls in the evening, I want to be close to the water, something I acheived in this sunset oil painting. The beautiful reflections makes an even more spectacular sight. I tried to replicate this experience with oil paint and palette knife.

 With this painting, I was at the marina in Fernandina Beach, FL when the sun dropped.  Talk about beautiful!  This is why people live in Florida.  Well, actually, I just returned from a week in Colorado and I have to admit it is just a gorgeous there.  I doubt there is a place on earth that is not beautiful when the sun sets.

I recently purchased a video from New Zealand artist,  Richard Robinson, that goes into detail about painting sunsets.  He is an oil painter, but when he paints sunsets, he starts with a white canvas and puts in the light area around the sun first, much like a watercolorist.  He then puts in a dab of white for the sun, and starts working outward from there to the other sky colors.  I tried that technique with this painting and found it worked well.

Small Seascape, "Stormy Beach Day" by Carol Schiff, 6x8 Oil, Palette Knife Seascape SOLD

Living in Florida, we get lots of sunny days.  This time of the year, it is normal for what starts out as a sunny day to suddenly change to black, threatening clouds, as the cool sea breezes collide over land

SOLD

with hot air from the west.  When that happens, it's time to run for cover as the effects can be fast and violent.  The last place you want to find yourself is on the beach as we live in an area fondly known as "Lightening Capitol of the World".  Every year we read of people who are struck with lightening and often do not survive.  On this day, we quickly ran for our car as the clouds rolled in.  I was happy to get a few shots of the storm.

I tried to capture that moment when the clouds roll in with the azure water quickly turning dark.

Daily Painting, Beach Scene, "Reel Her In" 8x10" Palette Knife Painting

This is the second time I have painted this scene.  The first time, several years ago, was a small 5x7.  I wanted to paint it larger, but couldn't find the image on my computer.  When I finally found it...I didn't have the size canvas I wanted to use (14x18) so, because I was frustrated I did it on the 8x10.

Daily Painting, Beach Scene, "Reel Her In" 8x10" Palette Knife Painting

This is the second time I have painted this scene.  The first time, several years ago, was a small 5x7.  I wanted to paint it larger, but couldn't find the image on my computer.  When I finally found it...I didn't have the size canvas I wanted to use (14x18) so, because I was frustrated I did it on the 8x10.

Sailboat Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Swirl" by Carol Schiff, 10x8x.75" Oil

I had so much fun with this sailboat painting!  I have a photo of a sailboat regatta we watched several years ago.  It was quite breezy and the little boats were buzzing around like bees, trying to complete their course.

 I wanted to really capture the feel of the day and the movement of the water and boats.  I started by applying texture to my blank canvas.

Then I attacked with a palette knife and plenty of thick paint,  trying to capture even more texture.

It was a perfect painting day...I danced around the studio in between strokes.  This little painting is at the top of the list in enjoyment and it still makes me smile when I see it!
