Journal Entry, Greece..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Discover Seascape Art, Realistic Seascape Paintings, Seascape Paintings, Contemporary Seascape Paintings, Abstract Seascape Paintings, as International Artists post daily their newest artwork. .

Today’s journal entry is of the Greek Islands. I took a cruise around the islands with my dearest artist pals a few years ago, great fun!

This image is from the island of Myconos, an island I had been to before, but still remains a favorite of mine.

I used my larger 8” x 10” Stillman Birn journal for this one.

Portofino Drift..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Finally finished this one.. Pastel on red Sennelier paper.

I am a part of a pastel presentation for Austin Pastel Society on Sunday 28th October  (approx. 3.30-4.30 pm) at Precision Camera in Austin. Please come along if you want to see a fun demonstration by 5 artists.

You would be most welcome. We have a silent auction at the end of each work, and the money raised goes into our scholarship fund.

This presentation is called a PAINT AROUND where all five artists begin on their own artwork for first ten minutes, then it is passed around to the next artist for them to do another ten minutes pastelling  on it.
The demo lasts one hour with the artwork ending up in front of the original artist, for them to 'tweak' what the other artists have done to their work.

Great fun!

The above pastel painting is me getting in readiness for this presentation.

This image measures 16" x 20" unframed
 $500 plus S/H

Chain Reaction..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Chain Reaction is a pastel on Sennelier paper.
Image size is 15.5" x 19.5" unframed

$450 plus S/H

I did quite a lot of reconstruction on the links from my initial drawing as in my photo it was not clear enough to follow. I made the water up and the wharf, both of which were not visible in my photo, which incidentally was a chain I saw on Maui in the Maalaea Harbor.

I also turned this one every which way during my process, and finally decided to make it a horizontal format.

Tidepool Interrupted..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I love to watch water move, whether it's a waterfall,  a pond or pool with a slight rippling effect. It's all mesmerizing to me and very peaceful.

I tried to capture that feeling with this one. That action of looking down into a rock pool when a ripple breaks the surface with such wonderful patterns.

I hope you like this one, it was a fun one to paint.

This image is a pastel (unframed ) on Sennelier sanded paper.

Like Music Adrift..Pastel.texas Artist...Rae Andrews..

Hi again, I am finally able to get back to a post on this blog. My hubby has been in hospital yet again, and my life is just very scattered right now, so no time for painting. Grrr!

I started this one about three days ago. It is a 19.5" x 25.5" pastel on red Sennelier sanded paper (unframed). This one was cathartic for me, with all the stress over the last few months. Just to paint again has been a real treat!

I love to paint water in any form as you may realize, and this rock pool (without the shells) was on Maui . I again 'sparked up my colors using Photoshop on my photo.
I used my own shell collection to pop in a little more interest.

I hope you like it. It was a fun image to paint.

$450 plus S/H

Lowtide, Bayview..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one, quite enjoying my watercolor escape lately.
This image is really out of my head, I wanted to reflect the trees a little in the lowtide waters, and the rocks came later.

This image is 18" x 24" unframed and is on Arches Cold Pressed paper.

Sea Cliff Haze..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Having traveled along the Amalfi Coast and seeing the wonderful vista of cliffs and misty coastline, this image evolved from memory. I often draw on my imagination when painting, I find it quite meditative. Just to let myself go with the rhythm of the sea and allow the marks to 'flow' from your fingertips..

Soft background music is also a help with this particular way of painting.

I know a lot of my students go through some angst when they can't pluck an image out of their heads and I understand this. It's not for everyone..

Even if you use a photo to begin a painting, put it away after the first few basic design strokes, and let your memory work for you, it does work, and you will get more of a 'personal feeling' about your scene which is (for me) far more seductive for your viewer.

I was trained to visually see a scene and memorize it a lot, especially with seascapes.

Also doing so many demos for various art groups, sometimes I have to use what's in my head to get a point across.
So, I so hope you like this one.. Seascapes are magical to paint, especially with pastels.

I used Pastel Premier paper for this one, and this surface is becoming a favorite of mine I have to admit. There is not a great deal of texture to it as with Sennelier, so certain subjects might not work as well for me. However, seascapes are a perfect subject matter.

Image size is 12" x 16" unframed

$300 plus S/H

Sunset Afterglow..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

SUNSET AFTERGOW is inspired by Maui and all the beach walks I did there at sunset. The soft and romantic colors are wonderful at this time of evening. How I miss that part of island life.

I always fine soft high key colors difficult to portray in my art, so this was a challenge.

This image is unframed and measures 8" x 10".

Headland at Lowtide..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

HEADLAND AT LOWTIDE  is an imaginary image, but one I have seen many times in my homeland of Australia. The light is so clear there, and the colors are so vibrant.

I am very inspired by color and movement as you all know, and any water scene will always captivate me.

I hope you like this one, it was fun to paint.
I have no idea of the substrate, it could be UArt paper but I truly don't know. It was one I found in my reserve drawer.

Becalmed..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Discover Seascape Art, Realistic Seascape Paintings, Seascape Paintings, Contemporary Seascape Paintings, Abstract Seascape Paintings, as International Artists post daily their newest artwork. .

Believe it not, I always thought sunset paintings were a bit 'cheesy' and I stayed well clear of doing any. I guess I have a had a change of heart in the last week or so.

This was an old demo and was trees originally. Yep..TREES!

I decided to just use a piece of foam to smudge the trees away enough for me to try doing the seascape you now see. I liked all my original colors, so wanted to take advantage of that.

Here is the finished result.. I hope you like it.

This image is on Sennelier sanded paper unframed.

Coastal Glow..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I felt like a change and decided on a coastal scene this time. I wanted a dramatic sky and bold colors. I had a different shaped piece of Colorfix mauve paper, and thought, why not?

Maui Riptide..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I guess I felt a need for a completely different genre, so here goes nothing.

This is a scene from my walks on Sugar Beach Maui. It's a long beach and great to stretch my legs.

I just love to watch the waves, and the way the light plays on the top of the crests.

A seascape needs to be studied at length before painting it, after all, it's never still for us, and photos simply don't do it justice.

They flatten the light and dull down the colors.

Having said that, this is a composite from my photos, and a lot is from memory, an impression, that's what I was aiming for.

I hope you like it.

                                                  This image is 9" x 25" unfarmed.
                                                               $500 plus S/H

Shell Fantasy..Watermedia...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

As with so many artists, I have bounced along in my long journey through my art.I work from realism to abstraction, many times, both these genres are apparent in any one piece.

I have been looking through my archives and found a few pieces I had not posted before.

Some are sold now, hopefully still hanging in client's homes.

It's interesting to look back at my older works, some of which I am very embarrassed about now, and the fact that I sold them. :((

In those days, it was just a thrill to have anyone take an interest in my work. It still is, but in my early days of painting I was not that discerning.. Yikes!

This piece, (which I liked by the way), was done back in 1990 or earlier I think, It sold the day I did it, and I regret that I did not have a decent photo of it at all. Until my search today through old photos, I had almost forgotten about it.

It was a full sheet of watercolor paper. I used watercolor mostly, and some white ink to make the lighter intriguing areas, a technique I went on to doing in several paintings later, up to the present day.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my trip down MEMORY LANE
